When people think of cruises, they often imagine endless buffets, indulgent desserts, and lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand. While all of that is available, what many don’t realize is that a cruise can also be a fantastic setting for a wellness-focused getaway. I recently experienced this firsthand on a Princess Cruise to Alaska, where I discovered just how possible it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle while sailing the open seas.



A Floating Wellness Retreat

One of the biggest surprises on my cruise was the number of options for staying healthy. Every day, I had access to unlimited fresh salads and a variety of fruit juices, which made it easy to get my daily dose of nutrients. While cruise ships are known for their extravagant food selections, I found that with a little self-control, I could enjoy my meals without overindulging. Unlike a wellness resort where the entire menu is curated for health-conscious travelers, a cruise does require more discipline (which i didn't have every night to be honest )—but the healthy choices are definitely there.

Fitness with a View

Exercise options on a cruise are readily available. My ship had daily yoga and stretch classes, giving you the chance to start your mornings with movement and mindfulness. For those who prefer a structured workout, the onboard gym was fully equipped with everything from treadmills to strength-training machines.

But my favorite way to stay active? Walking. Between exploring the ship and venturing out at port stops, I was getting in thousands of steps per day without even thinking about it. One day, I logged 17,000 steps—a mix of walking the decks while taking in the stunning Alaskan scenery and exploring the ports on foot. It felt amazing to stay so active while also soaking in the beauty of the journey.

Relaxation, Reimagined

A big part of wellness is relaxation, and a cruise offers endless ways to unwind. Whether it was lounging on my balcony with a hot cup of coffee, enjoying a hot tub, or simply sitting on the top deck watching the ever-changing landscape, I found so many ways to nourish my soul. The peacefulness of sailing through Alaska’s breathtaking fjords felt like a retreat in itself.

The key to wellness on a cruise is intention. Unlike a dedicated wellness resort where everything is designed to support a healthy lifestyle, a cruise presents both temptation and opportunity. By consciously choosing meals, balancing relaxation with movement, and focusing on how you feel rather than just what you eat, you can create a wellness experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated—rather than weighed down by indulgence.

So, if you’ve been hesitant to take a cruise because you think it will derail your health goals, think again. With a little mindfulness, you can have the best of both worlds—adventure, relaxation, and a commitment to wellness—all while walking on water.
